{"id":15650,"date":"2021-04-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aquent.com\/?p=15650"},"modified":"2021-04-28T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T09:00:00","slug":"advice-for-planning-your-next-career-move-in-ux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io\/en-au\/blog\/advice-for-planning-your-next-career-move-in-ux","title":{"rendered":"Advice for planning your next career move in UX"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, I gave some UX career development advice to 60 UX practitioners at a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uxaustralia.com.au\/news\/women-in-ux-meetup-hosted-by-aquent-recap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women in UX Meetup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, organised by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uxaustralia.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and UX Career Mentor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/magshanley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mags Hanley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The feedback post-event was so good, I thought I'd put my career advice in writing for others to reference.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kateverran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My focus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this post is on helping UX candidates to understand the market, use these insights to build a business case for your career and bring it all together to tell your career story.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let's take a deep dive\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Research the market (look outward)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step is to gain an understanding of the market and then work out how your skills align. Ideally you want to identify the key skills \/ experience that are in demand and ensure you are highlighting these if you have them. I would recommend you research the following key elements:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Salaries&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out Aquent's online <\/span><a title=\"Compare My Salary\" href=\"https:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io.au\/compare-my-salary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salary Comparison tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it aggregates data in real time, giving you a current pulse check on market expectations&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Types of UX roles being advertised<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep an eye out for roles coming through on your LinkedIn feed and forums such as the UX Australia slack channel.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run some job searches on LinkedIn, Seek, Indeed etc. I recommend keeping the search as general as possible to gain a big picture overview (eg. UX Designer not Senior or Midweight) as job titles and levels can vary and are sometimes included in posting content.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io.au\/find-work\/?k=ux&amp;l=all&amp;ux=on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">search for UX jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.www-beta.aquent.io\/mat\/myaquent?PROC=AWUIDrawMatLogin&amp;locale=en_AU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">register for job alerts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on<a title=\"Aquent Australia\" href=\"https:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io.au\"> Aquent's website<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Research in demand skills \/ experience<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call a specialist recruiter \u2013&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io.au\/go\/kateverran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like me ;D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ask for insights&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dig into your job search results \u2014 can you spot any trends?&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps there are lots of mid-weight level roles. Do most UX Design roles also request UI Design skills? Do lots of job roles mention Product? Do User Research roles mention User Testing? etc\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scan postings for the number of years experience \u2014 no matter the job title, this can vary significantly (a senior in one team may be a Mid-weight in another team).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a dream client and want to dig a bit deeper, run a LinkedIn search for employees and check out their team for skills focus \/ background \/ experience level. ie. you might be UX Research focused, but their team is all UX\/UI blend (or vice versa), so this may help frame out skills you want to build upon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Research the level of UX job roles being advertised and understand how they differ<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spend a lot of time talking to people about this, in terms of their own skills but also how it differs between roles and clients. Here are some general notes on skill level:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Graduate \/ internship \/ junior <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&gt; Less than 1 year commercial studio experience.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Midweight &gt; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MUST have commercial studio experience, ideally more than 2 years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Senior &gt; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least 5 years specialist \/ niche skill experience, usually more. Requirements vary significantly between clients, but at a minimum you will need the ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects. Strong stakeholder communication skills \u2014 usually a hands-on practitioner. There maybe some level of leadership involved, but not always and it maybe informal (ie. mentoring\/coaching, but no direct reports, or leading everything UX related on project teams).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Lead &gt; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recommend investigating what leadership means for the role (and for you). Is it leading your practice area, leading projects\/programs of work, or people leadership with direct reports or building teams?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Build a UX business case (look inward)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have a good understanding of what's happening in the market, it's time to work out where your UX experience, skills and expectations sit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Run a critical review<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undertaking a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io.au\/blog\/using-your-ux-skills-to-architect-your-career\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">critical review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is important to u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nderstand your role, skills, level and salary expectations \u2013&nbsp;you need to be realistic here, it can be tough.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Identify the core UX skills \/ experience that you currently have and identify the skills you need to develop<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io.au\/blog\/using-your-ux-skills-to-architect-your-career\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current state \/ future state analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on yourself.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to identify where your strengths and skills lie. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Identify your USP\/value add\/niche skills (hard &amp; soft skills)&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work out where you go above and beyond and what sets you apart \u2014&nbsp;it could be sector experience, the type of projects you've worked on, or your personal approach. Ideally you want this to align to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where you want to be long term.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>If you've moved into the UX space, what can you leverage?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These could help bolster your USPs \u2014 for example if presented with five other similar candidates (eg. Midweight UX Designers), what would set you apart? What else do you bring to the role\/team\/business?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember a client is investing in your CURRENT skill level for their role, so while you may have 15 years digital design experience, if you are wanting to work as a Service Designer this means very little beyond creating really nice reports and presentations, and having some insights into the digital platform and systems being used.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Where do you want to be 1, 3, and 5 years time?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be a loose idea or fixed objectives, but either way, you want something on your radar, bubbling away in the background. If you're contracting, you might need to keep reminding yourself of this \u2014&nbsp;balancing short term focus with longer term career objectives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Now you have a career objective, how are you going to achieve it?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be realistic about building a plan to get yourself there.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you gain experience via your current role \/ employer? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make it known you want to build your skills and actively seek out opportunities to support on projects or tasks. It may be sitting in to help with note taking, support on workshops, designing up research reports etc.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you need to consider a side step role to gain inroads\/skills in a key area?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may only have the option of training\/development via a permanent role so be realistic about this \u2014 if your preference is to contact where you're being paid by the hour\/day, training may not be achievable.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you volunteer your time\/skills to help a NFP sector client? It's a win\/win and good for your soul.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there potential to supplement project experience with self initiated projects?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Tell your career story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where you weave this all together&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring all these elements together to make your strategic business case for new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io.au\/find-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">job search<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or appraisal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows you to review opportunities with a strategic lens.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak confidently and realistically about who you are, what your skills are, what you can offer.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This gives you clarity on the type of questions you can ask re. What the business\/role can offer you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I want you to think about your own <a href=\"http:\/\/www-beta.aquent.io.au\/blog\/how-to-tell-your-career-story-in-an-interview-230720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">career story<\/a> now<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n    \n<blockquote class=\"blockquote\" id=\"block_892f7f41254dcbd090cae2cd01912448\">\n    <div><span><\/span><\/div>\n    <p>Can you sum up your key focus, what sets you apart and your journey into UX in a couple of sentences?<\/p>\n    <cite class=\"blockquote__attribution\">\n                    <\/cite>\n<\/blockquote><!-- #block_892f7f41254dcbd090cae2cd01912448 -->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you've made it through to the end of this content \u2013 congratulations, I know it's looooong!
